Giving items to the Homeless

A common misconception in giving to the poor is that cash is the best because then they can buy whatever they need. This is false. The reason people are homeless is for the very reason that they could not bring themselves to buy what they needed, often misused on drugs, alcohol or just uncontrollable spending. Giving homeless cash simply keeps them going back to the same mistakes that put them where they are now. Below are examples of appropriate items that may help someone on the streets.

• Gift cards to fast food restaurants for small amounts with an encouraging note.
• Actual foods home-made or store bought.
• Water bottles, Gatorade or other sports drinks.
• Coupons to purchase foods and personal hygiene items.
• Reading material that is uplifting and not difficult to read.
• Information to the nearest homeless shelters or local organizations hosting soup kitchens or activities for the homeless.

Always be Careful

Although it is a charitable thing to offer help to those who are less fortunate that we may run into on any moment’s notice, we need to be careful to protect ourselves of the possible threats some homeless offer. Perhaps not in all cases but the most common reason for homelessness is said to be mental illness. Do not give personal information beyond a first name such as phone numbers, home addresses, etc. Halfway homes and homeless shelters are meant to help the homeless. Directing them to such places is the best choice.
